Craig Sager's cancer fight has been a long, winding battle. Since his diagnosis in early 2014, the NBA sideline commentator has gone through treatment, recovery, relapse and additional rounds of treatment.
During the summer, Sager underwent bone-marrow transplant surgery, along with additional rounds of chemotherapy. Click2Houston checked in on the Houston-based reporter and found some things had changed: Sager has lost his hair, as well as 50 pounds.
But plenty remains the same: His smile and light personality are still intact, as are his plans to return to the NBA soon.
Sager says his doctor is optimistic that he'll return to his job as the sideline reporter wearing colorful suits -- and possibly in time for the regular-season opener.
"I said, 'The NBA season starts Oct. 27, what are my chances?' He goes, 'Oh they're good!'" Sager explains.
Barring any setbacks, he plans to return to his normal role, which will include regular NBA reporting as well as special projects, such as the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Brazil.
Some have questioned whether Sager, at 64, will opt for retirement after his cancer battle. It's a question that doesn't make sense to him.
"I've got the greatest job in the world. It's not like I'm out in the sun digging ditches," Sager tells Click2Houston. "I'm going to the greatest sporting events in the world."
In the meantime, Sager continues to focus on his cancer fight, and on returning to full health.
Says Sager: "I've got a lot of work to do."
