The embarrassment keeps coming for Lance Armstrong. He lost numerous sponsorships and was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles. And now he has been lit on fire and burned to shreds.
Sort of.
A 30-foot effigy of Armstrong was burned Saturday in Kent, England as part of the town's Guy Fawkes Night festivities. The holiday commemorates Fawkes' failed attempt to assassinate King James I and blow up the House of Lords in 1605. Now the day is celebrated with large-scale fireworks displays, like the one organized by the Edenbridge Bonfire Society in Kent.
Every year the Bonfire society sets fire to a giant effigy of Fawkes as well as a certain reviled politician or celebrity. Figures of comedian Russell Brand and former British prime minister Tony Blair have been destroyed in the past.
Armstrong's effigy was holding a sign which read, "For sale, racing bike no longer required." On Saturday night, fireworks burst from the effigy as oil-soaked paper burned inside it.
Armstrong is the third consecutive sporting figure to be burned, following Mario Balotelli in 2011 and Wayne Rooney in 2010.
