Point guard Trey Burke was the national player of the year at Michigan and led the squad within one win of a national championship, the same plateau reached by the Wolverines’ “Fab Five” of 1992 and 1993. Now Burke has the keys to an NBA franchise that knows championship heartbreak intimately -- the Jazz. Utah came up short in two straight years to Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls.
A tanking effort currently appears in the works for Utah. The Jazz allowed Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap to depart in free agency and traded for the expiring contracts of Warriors castoffs Richard Jefferson and Andris Biedrins. If Utah wins the Andrew Wiggins sweepstakes, Burke could take the franchise to heights it and Michigan just barely missed.
