March 9, 2000: The Harlem Globetrotters retire Wilt Chamberlain's No. 13 during an appearance at his alma mater, Overbrook High School in Philadelphia.
Chamberlain passed away five months earlier. He was 63.
Chamberlain wanted to turn pro after his junior season in college at Kansas. But at the time the NBA didn't allow underclassmen to enter the draft. Rather than returning for one more year with the Jayhawks, Chamberlain signed with the Globetrotters.
It's hard to imagine now, but Chamberlain actually made more money in his one year with the Globetrotters ($50,000) than he did as an NBA rookie the following season with the Warriors ($30,000).
His No. 13 is also retired by the Warriors, 76ers and Lakers.
