Mets Get Resourceful With Beer

When Jeurys Familia recorded the final out of the NLDS Thursday night, the Mets clinched the series with less than 48 hours before first pitch of the NLCS. Despite the euphoria, a cross-country trip awaited. The Cubs finished their seriesTuesday, allowing time to celebrate with Eddie Vedder and prepare for MLB's semifinals.

In the moment, the Mets did not hold back their celebration. The team made a beer slip 'n slide in the Dodgers' visitors' clubhouse.

That is pitcher Jon Niese gliding through a pool of Budweiser. People say backup quarterback is the best position in football because one gets paid to stand with a playbook and a headset. Niese's position may be the baseball equivalent. The 28-year-old, who debuted with the Mets in 2008 at 21, pitched in 33 games in 2015, making 29 starts. With the emergence of Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz, Niese has essentially dropped to the sixth spot in the Mets' starting rotation (also behind Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey and Bartolo Colon). Niese made one appearance in the NLDS, pitching one-third of an inning. He struck out Justin Ruggiano to end the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 2.

And he gets to party as much as he wants. Niese contributed to the team during the year, and now he cheerleads and goes headfirst through beer. He did not lose his job for struggling reasons as much as the Mets just getting really good as the year progressed.

The Mets also sprayed a lot of champagne in the clubhouse, so Niese probably tasted that too.

The Mets host the Cubs in Game 1 on Saturday at 8:07 p.m. ET.
