Bills Fans

How great is modern technology? Not only can we do things like stream live TV on our phones, build electric cars and stalk friends on social media, but we can also use smartphones to determine the drunkest of NFL fanbases!

NFL Drunkest Fans Study

VinePair, a drinking culture website, partnered with BACtrack, a brand of portable breathalyzers that can link to smartphones, to study the intoxication level of NFL fans. BACtrack collected data anonymously from users with the BACtrack app on BACtrack Mobile and BACtrack Vio smartphone breathalyzers. Researchers used Twitter's map of NFL fan allegiance to backtrack fans to their corresponding NFL teams (by the way, technology is crazy these days). Data was taken for the first seven NFL weeks of the regular season from 6 a.m. each Sunday to 5:59 a.m. Monday.

In an unsurprising victory, the Buffalo Bills have the drunkest fan base, blowing an average 0.076 BAC. Considering the Bills have the longest active postseason drought of 15 seasons (since the Jan. 8, 2000, Music City Miracle Play), this behavior has been going on a long time. The 3-4 Bills are actually only one game out of the playoffs right now, so maybe it is time to put down the bottle and watch Rex Ryan's respectable football team.

Fellow disgruntled fan bases in Detroit, Philadelphia and Cleveland round out the top four. Then again, fans of the Raiders, Jaguars, Rams, Buccaneers and Jets provided insufficient data to be included in the study. Based on observation, Jets fans could have given Bills fans a run for their money.

The undefeated Bengals have the NFL's soberest fan base at No. 27. Marvin Lewis led steady Cincinnati to five playoff appearances in the last six seasons.

Of the cities in the top 14, only Indianapolis has won a Super Bowl since 1995.

BACTrack's division winners for the first seven weeks were the Bills, Browns, Colts, Chargers, Eagles, Lions, Panthers and Cardinals. The Colts, Panthers and Cardinals lead their divisions in football, as well.
