Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm

On top of her knockout loss to Holly Holm, Ronda Rousey is now being suspended. No, not for anything illegal. She is being forced to sit out due to injuries sustained in UFC 193.

The UFC prohibits Rousey from an official fight for 180 days (or earlier if cleared by a negative head CT scan). She cannot fight on her own time for 60 days and she can have no contact for 45 days.

The extent of Rousey's injuries is unknown, but the former UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion was visibly shaken up after her knockout loss to Holm. Rousey took a final kick to the neck, and her face displayed wounds from direct punches. Based on the suspension, it can be inferred Rousey suffered a serious head injury.

Ronda Rousey Injury

Rousey was not the only UFC 193 fighter to get a six-month medical suspension. Joanna Jedrzejczyk, who defended her Women's Strawweight Champion, was among those given half-year bans.

The UFC dished Holm a mandatory seven days rest for her medical suspension.

Medical suspensions in the U.S. are typically handled by state athletic commissions and not made public. However, as UFC 193 was in Australia, the UFC regulated itself and passed the list of medical suspensions on to MixedMartialArts.com.

Rousey previously stated she would take time off after UFC 193, win or lose. This suspension makes that promise mandatory. Although a rematch with Holm was not going to happen within six months, this elongated suspension could delay that hypothetical matchup.

Talk about insult to injury.
